CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY

Sonoma County is served by two Assembly Members:

A dentist, he represents the 2nd State Assembly District and was elected in 2014.

and Marc Levine (Democrat) who represents the 10th State Assembly District and was first elected in 2012.

What do Assembly Members do? The California State Assembly has 80 members elected to two-year terms. Assembly Members are assigned to various committees to review bills according to a subject area. Under the provisions of term limits, each Member elected on or after the passage of Proposition 28, in 2012, may serve a lifetime maximum of 12 years in the State Legislature. Assembly Members who were first elected to the State Legislature on or after the passage of Proposition 28 may serve 12 years in the Assembly, or a combination of service in the Assembly and Senate as long as the combined terms do not exceed 12 years. However, Members elected to the State Assembly prior to the passage of Proposition 28 may serve a maximum of three two-year terms established by the passage of Proposition 140, in 1990. (Info from Office of the Chief Clerk)

CALIFORNIA STATE SENATE

Sonoma County is served by two State Senators.

Mike McGuire  (Democrat) represents the 2nd Senate District and was first elected in 2014. He previously served on the Board of Supervisors for one term, and before that he was on the Healdsburg City Council and the Healdsburg School Board. He's obviously got his eyes on bigger and better things,  probably waiting/hoping for Congressman Mike Thompson to retire. He's young, popular and in our opinion, tries to play it too safe, not utilizing his popularity to do what's right, even if his Big Ag supporters don't approve. We were very disappointed when he abstained from voting on two bills designed to help farmworkers; one was for overtime and the other was to provide shade. He said it would be a financial burden on small farms. Bullshit.

and Bill Dodd  (Democrat) who represents the 3rd Senate District to which he was first elected in 2016. Some financial backers include PG&E, Walmart, Chevron and Valero.

What do State Senators do? The California State Senate has 40 Members elected to four-year terms. Like Assembly Members, State Senators elected on or after the passage of Proposition 28, in 2012, may serve a lifetime maximum of 12 years in the State Legislature. Also, like Assembly Members, Senators who were first elected to the State Legislature on or after the passage of Proposition 28 may serve 12 years in the Senate, or a combination of service in the Assembly and Senate as long as the combined terms do not exceed 12 years. Senators elected to the State Legislature prior to the passage of Proposition 28 are bound by two four-year terms in the State Senate and three two-year terms in the State Assembly established by the passage of Proposition 140, in 1990.
