What do our Senators and Representatives do?
Congress is divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Each state is represented in the Senate by two senators, no matter the size of the state's population. Therefore, a vote by a majority of senators has the potential to, and often does, represent a minority of the people in the United States. Each California senator represents residents of California and is elected by a vote of all the registered voters of California.
The House of Representatives is made up of congresspeople representing districts of equal size and, therefore, the number of districts varies by population size of the states. A vote in the House is more representative of the population of the U.S.
The population numbers, upon which the House districts are based, are derived from the U.S. Census, taken every ten years. 2020 is a Census year and for the people of a state to be properly represented in the House of Representatives, it is important that all residents (even the undocumented) be counted in the Census.
Each member of the House of Representatives represents only the residents of their district, not the entire state, and only the registered voters of a district elect their House member. California has fifty-three districts.
